To list mobile devices in Exchange Online, run Get-MobileDevice -ResultSize Unlimited in Exchange Online PowerShell and export the result. It returns the phones and tablets with an active partnership with a mailbox, the Outlook app among them, and stops at 1000 unless you set the result size. When each device last synced comes from the device statistics, which are read 1 mailbox at a time.
| Method | Best fit |
|---|---|
| PowerShell | A CSV of every device with a mailbox partnership, with its model, operating system and first sync. |
| Admin centre | A quick look at 1 person's phones and tablets. |
| Altivane | Recommended for regular device reviews, with each device's last sync and the inactive ones marked. |
Before you start
Use an account in the Organization Management or Recipient Management role group in Exchange Online. Members of View-Only Organization Management can view mobile device details without changing them. The examples sign in to Exchange Online with your own account.
Know what the list covers. Get-MobileDevice returns devices by their partnership with a mailbox: a phone or tablet that syncs through Exchange ActiveSync or the Outlook app. A device enrolled in Intune appears only if it also syncs mail with Exchange. The examples read and export; they do not wipe, block or remove any device.
Option 1
List mobile devices with PowerShell
Install the module once, then connect and export every device with a partnership. Keep -ResultSize Unlimited: without it the cmdlet stops at 1000 devices.
# Install once, if the module is not already installed.
Install-Module -Name ExchangeOnlineManagement -Scope CurrentUser$ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'
Connect-ExchangeOnline -ShowBanner:$false
try {
$devices = @(Get-MobileDevice -ResultSize Unlimited)
if ($devices.Count -eq 0) {
Write-Output 'No mobile devices have a partnership with a mailbox.'
} else {
$devices |
Sort-Object UserDisplayName, FriendlyName |
Select-Object UserDisplayName, FriendlyName, DeviceModel, DeviceOS, DeviceType,
ClientType, DeviceAccessState, FirstSyncTime, Identity |
Export-Csv -Path './mobile-devices.csv' -NoTypeInformation -Encoding utf8
Write-Output "$($devices.Count) mobile devices exported."
}
} finally {
Disconnect-ExchangeOnline -Confirm:$false
}The CSV keeps who each device belongs to, what it is and when it first synced, sorted by person. Identity starts with the name of the mailbox the device syncs with. To narrow the list, add -Filter with a property the cmdlet can filter on, such as DeviceOS or ClientType, or add -Mailbox for 1 person.
See when 1 mailbox's devices last synced
Reconnect with Connect-ExchangeOnline, then read the device statistics for 1 mailbox. The export above disconnects when it finishes.
# Run while connected to Exchange Online. Replace the example mailbox.
Get-EXOMobileDeviceStatistics -Mailbox 'person@example.com' | Format-ListThe statistics include when each device last synced, which the export above does not. Microsoft recommends Get-EXOMobileDeviceStatistics over Get-MobileDeviceStatistics in Exchange Online. Each call reads 1 mailbox.
Option 2
View a mailbox's mobile devices in the admin centre
- Sign in to the Exchange admin centre for the correct tenant.
- Go to Recipients > Mailboxes.
- Select the person's mailbox, and under Email apps & mobile devices, select Manage mobile devices.
- On the Mobile Device Details page, read the devices listed under Mobile devices.
- Close the page without choosing a wipe or Block access: both act on the device.
This suits a question about 1 person, such as a lost or replaced phone. It shows 1 mailbox at a time; for the whole organisation, use PowerShell or a report.
Option 3 ยท Recommended for regular device reviews
Report on mobile devices with Altivane
- Open Altivane and choose the tenant.
- Run the Mobile Devices report. It reads the device statistics of each mailbox with devices, so it takes longer in an organisation with many.
- Open the Excel workbook and find the Mobile devices sheet: 1 row per phone or tablet, with its mailbox, model, operating system, client, access state, first sync and last sync.
- Start with the rows marked Review, listed first: devices with no successful sync within the inactive days you set (90 by default), or none at all.
Altivane reads the device list, then the device statistics once for each mailbox that has devices, and puts each device's last successful sync and the days since on its row. Each row also gives the mailbox's address and type. Where a mailbox's statistics cannot be read, its devices are still listed with no last sync, and the workbook's Not read sheet says which mailbox and why. The workbook is kept, so 1 review can be compared with the next.
Contact usCommon questions
Why does the list stop at 1000 devices?
Get-MobileDevice returns 1000 results unless told otherwise. Add -ResultSize Unlimited, as the script does, to get every device.
Why does Outlook on a phone and a tablet show as 1 device?
Outlook for iOS and Android appears as a single mobile device for each person, however many phones and tablets run it. A wipe sent to it removes Outlook's data from all of them.
Why is a phone enrolled in Intune missing from the list?
The list holds devices with a partnership with a mailbox. A device enrolled in Intune that has never synced mail with Exchange has none, so it is not listed. For devices that have stopped checking in with Intune, see how to find stale devices in Intune.
